Birth Stories & Testimonials

The Birth of Jasper

Hey Wendy, thanks for your great session. You really gave me the confidence to trust my body & myself in bringing Jasper into the world. Had an intense 4hrs between my waters breaking & Jasper arriving, all went to plan. I went a bit lighter with the gas & air this time, which let me listen to my body more & get more out of my contractions. Couldn’t have done it without Mark rubbing my shoulder & telling me I could do it.

Definitely very pleased that we did our session, it really helped me feel prepared & confident. xxx

The Birth of Charlotte

Hi Wendy!

Sorry it’s taken so long but we just wanted to let you know that our little girl that we were waiting so patiently for finally arrived! We feel we had such a positive birth experience using our hypnobirthing tools and what we learnt during your course. Thank you so so much!!

I’m currently sat writing to you with baby Charlotte on my chest after her early morning feed! She is now 5 weeks old and is an absolute dream. We are besotted with her. She was born on 24th September at 9:44am and weighed 8lb.

I also thought you might want to know our birth story, so here goes…!!

Cont'd below...

We waited patiently for her but 40 weeks came and went. My midwife asked to book in an induction date but I declined at this point, trusting that my body and baby would know what to do when the time came. We were both well and luckily I had no complications so the midwife agreed.

41 weeks came and I initially declined a sweep at this point. We were both still absolutely fine so the midwife agreed with me. She explained induction again and that this would be the preferred option for us and we eventually agreed that if needed, induction would be the last resort, on the last possible date (which happened to be our first wedding anniversary!). After a couple of days, using my BRAIN, I agreed to have a sweep in the hope that this would avoid me needing to be induced (and be the lesser of 2 evils).

Coincidentally, my waters broke spontaneously 2 days before my proposed induction date and we were so excited! This was also 12 days past my due date at 23:56pm on Thursday night. I went in to get checked and I had some dull aches in my lower abdomen on the way to the hospital. There was meconium in my waters and the doctor and midwife advised that I stay in, despite me wanting to go home and continue my labour there.

Using my BRAIN again, I agreed and asked for mobile monitoring so I could stay active and move around as much as I wanted to. The lovely midwife set up our room on labour ward as I requested with dull lights, a sound machine and sparkly lights from their projector which was amazing! They made it as non clinical as possible.

Despite having some contractions, I was advised to have an oxytocin drip to speed things along due to the meconium. Daniel was brilliant in supporting me and making me feel comfortable and respected the whole time, so I’m sure that this was the main reason for my labour progressing. He advocated for me and made sure that I felt safe and was luckily allowed to be with me from the beginning. I don’t think I could’ve done it without him.

I tried to get some sleep but my contractions intensified quite quickly. Throughout my labour is used my breathing techniques and we had our hypnobirthing playlist on all of the time.

By 8am, I was 6cm dilated and started using the gas and air, but at 8:40 I started to feel my body push! I went with my body, pushed for 44mins and she was born! We were able to do delayed cord clamping and Daniel cut her cord before we both had skin to skin and she latched on to feed.

We were fortunately both absolutely fine and had such a positive birth experience. The midwives were amazing and I felt listened to and respected throughout. Despite it not being the minimal intervention water birth I wanted, it was still amazing and I felt empowered and informed to make the right choices for me and my baby. I felt like a superwoman!!

Thank you so much again for your brilliant hypnobirthing course and your kind and supportive words. We love our little Charlotte so much.

Love Sarah, Daniel and Charlotte xx

The Birth of Sienna

I first found about about hypnobirthing from a family friend who had a wonderful, calm quick and medication free birth…

I stumbled acrossWendy's website while searching for a local class and booked in straight away.

At 22 weeks we were due to start our course…nervously knocking on Wendy’s door
I must say I was fairly relieved not to be greeted by a new age hippy cleansing my aura as I walked through the door.

Cont'd below...

I’d like to say Wendy is normal…but really she is incredible.

Wendy talked us through the birthing process with such excitement and easing any worries we may have had… we ended up booking her to be our
doula to support us through a home birth.

Before the birth Wendy was an endless source of support and knowledge, meeting my husband and I in our home to ensure she fully understood the type of birth we wanted.

Due to midwife shortages I didn’t get to have my home birth but Wendy dealt with all the midwives and hospital staff and ensured I had a ‘home from home’ room and got to birth my beautiful baby girl calm surroundings.

I honestly never thought it was possible to have a ‘pain free labour’ and in some ways there was pain…but not like you would imagine. Hypnobirthing equipped me with the tools to cope and Wendy provided both me and my husband with the love and support we needed at this most incredible time. I really don’t think I could have done it without her… In fact I intend to have Wendy at every birth I ever have!!

Lots of love Louise, Paul and Sienna xxx

The Birth of Primrose

I had always wanted to do HBing whilst pregnant with my first baby and had recommendations to use Wendy at The Little Birth Company. The group sessions were relaxing and educational and I always left feeling excited about the birth, while they also allowed us to meet other likeminded couples.

My husband said the sessions filled him with confidence, positivity and he felt like he gained so much knowledge of how
to help me in labour. We both loved practicing the relaxations at home, which became a regular thing and we found that we slept really deeply afterwards.

Cont'd below...

The birth was a fantastic experience, exactly as I had hoped for. Surges started straight after my waters released during the night and within 6 hours our baby girl was born in the pool. She didn’t keep us waiting and came on her due date. I was able to stay in control and relaxed throughout the intense surges due to listening to the MP3s throughout the labour, whilst my body took over and did the rest.

I am so thankful that we used HBing and believe it contributed hugely to the whole experience, which will forever be one of the best days of our lives.

Thanks so much Wendy x

The Birth of Nova Rae

Hi Wendy!
Just thought I’d let you know how the birth went!
Because of the GD, I had a sweep at 39+5 (the Friday) to hopefully get things going, having an induction booked 6 days later at 40+4.

Luckily, around 3.30pm on the Saturday after not feeling right all day, I started to have some contractions! With my history of fast labours, by 4pm we called for back up with the older girls. We fed them and bathed them with me feeling best pacing around and being mobile.

By 5.30pm I thought it was best to go into hospital, still very much able to breathe through the contractions without much thought using the ‘54321 deeply relax’ breath.

Cont'd below...

Due to the GD I had to be monitored throughout, which meant having to lie on the bed to get strapped up which was hard! But thankfully our midwife was so amazing and was absolutely on board with the type of birth I wanted and encouraged me to be upright/mobile but just within reach of the monitor. I was examined after around 15 mins of monitoring and was 9cm to my delight!

With the help of gas and air, and the 5 square breathing, I felt like superwoman with those surges! A little bit later I was pushing and within 3/4 pushes and an explosion of my waters, she was out whilst standing up over the bed just before 7pm!

It was an incredible experience!!

I’m physically now doing great and so is little one, but what an amazing birth experience this time around and thank you for your invaluable refresher course!!

We cannot thank you enough x

The Birth of Nova

Our little bundle of joy Nova Ada Smith was born on Monday 22nd November at 4:22am weighing 7lbs 11oz.
I was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia on Nova’s due date, Friday 19th November and was advised to be induced. We decided to go home that night and wait for my blood test results to confirm preeclampsia. A phone call in the morning confirmed I needed my blood pressure monitored so I was admitted and then induced via the gel that evening. By midnight I was already 3cm and felt no contractions at all! We waited for a space on the labour ward until Sunday evening at 6:30pm where the midwife then broke my waters and we were left to wander around the hospital as we pleased for 2 hrs before being checked again. Feeling completely fine and comfortable I was then given the oxytocin drip and wore the baby’s heartbeat bands.

Cont'd below...

Things started to intensify but nothing I couldn’t use hypnobirthing to breath through. It got to midnight and I was using the gas and air but was still at 3cm, trying to stay upright on the bed and bouncing on the ball really helped. My body then went full steam ahead from 3cm to birthing Nova in about 4 hours!! Apparently high blood pressure can increase the speed of delivery! I had pethadine which made me quite sick but the gas and air really helped as I could control how much and when I had it. The transition just before my body went into pushing Nova out I have to say was surreal. It was like my body was letting me rest and catch my breath for the final stretch. Nova’s heartbeat started dropping just before the birth so I had a ventouse and episiotomy to speed up the delivery. We still didn’t know our little Nova was a girl so with 1 contraction the head was out followed very quickly by the body. The consultant held her up so Matt and I could see it was a girl first which was very special! Since that moment we have been in complete awe of Nova and how we have managed to grow our own little human! My entire labour and birth was made so much calmer listening to the hypnobirthing mp3 tracks and having the low level lighting and tea lights to focus on. The midwives were outstanding and hypnobirthing will stay with me for life so thank you!

Thank you, Tilly xx

The Birth of Luna Rae

It was a new moon, which we hadn’t realised (but now love how fitting that was), and I woke up around 8am with period pains coming at the same time as lower back pains. I thought it felt a little different to any twinges I’d had before but didn’t want to over-think it. Throughout the day, the feelings were getting a little stronger each time but they had no pattern to when, or how often, they were coming so I just carried on as normal (shopping and having cream tea at Redfields Garden Centre!). By lunchtime, I knew the feelings were definitely something because it didn’t matter what I did, whether it was sitting, standing or lying down, they didn’t change. By 5pm, the ‘period pains’ were getting stronger and were coming more regularly and by this point I knew that they were in fact small surges, but I still wasn’t confident enough to tell Martin how sure I was. I carried on with the evening as normal, had some friends over and cooked dinner.

Cont'd below...

Our friends left at 7pm knowing I was having ‘strong period pains’ but I hadn’t said the big ‘L’ word, however as soon as they’d left I told Martin I was pretty sure this was labour! By this point, surges were coming about 4/5 every hour and, although I didn’t quite need to change my breathing to cope with them, I couldn’t think about anything else with each one. By 8pm, I had messaged Wendy and told her what I was feeling and asked if she thought it was too early to put on my TENS machine. The surges were coming 1 or 2 at least every 10 minutes and were getting stronger.

Of course Wendy replied with the most supportive and excited message that made me feel amazing and reminded me that ‘actually, I CAN DO THIS’! Her message really took away that last little bit of anxiety which was lingering. I stopped doubting myself and listened to my body and thought “wow, our baby is coming”! By 9pm the TENS machine was on and was working its magic. I was slowly working up the pulses of the TENS machine so that it would distract me as much as possible from each surge. Martin was setting up the pool and I was watching Harry Potter (my absolute favourite!). Between then and around 10pm, Martin had been timing my surges and when I said “I wonder if we should let the midwife know”, he told me that my surges were lasting 50-60 seconds, and coming about 3 every 10 minutes, I was so surprised to find out that they were coming so close together.

Whilst I knew I needed to close my eyes and breath with each surge, I didn’t realise they were coming so regularly. I started to get quite anxious and everything seemed to be irritating me (even Love Island!!!). After debating what to watch next on tv, we decided it was best to turn it off, which is when I put on Wendy’s 5,4,3,2,1 mp3. I felt myself immediately relax. Martin called the hospital and we had the midwife arrive about 11.30pm. Whilst waiting for the midwife to arrive my legs were very shaky which I didn’t expect, but once she (Mandy) arrived I completely relaxed knowing someone else was there and she told me that the shaking was completely normal. The first thing Mandy did was calmly introduce herself and read my notes and our birth plan. She then came in to see me, explained what she was going to do, and took my ‘obs’. By this point I was having to really focus on my breathing techniques to help me deal with each surge, but I still knew I could cope with each one. Martin and Mandy were very good at falling silent and letting me focus through each surge (thanks to me clicking the ‘boost’ button on the TENs machine
at the start and end of each one).

I was quite surprised at how normal I felt in between surges and I was able to chat with Martin and Mandy as though everything was normal whilst staying relaxed. Once Mandy had been with us for a couple of hours (I think?), she suggested a VE to see how dilated I was. Although I thought I would be against the idea, I was actually quite keen to see if I was at all dilated knowing that I only wanted to get in the birth pool near the end of labour. The examination wasn’t the nicest thing I’ve ever been through, but Mandy was able to confirm that my waters hadn’t broken, and that I was 4cm dilated. I was really surprised as I expected it to be a lot less (because I’d been dealing with the surges so well). For the next couple of hours I spent most of the time on my exercise ball and moving around the house, walking up and down the stairs etc, trying to bring the baby down. Martin was with me through every surge as he’d also been listening to the hypnobirthing mp3s, and he was very good at saying the right things to help motivate me through and keep me calm. At around 2.30am, during a surge, I felt a pop (it felt like a baby kick, but very low down). I expected a gush of water but only felt a trickle. Mandy explained that as my waters broke, the baby's head would have
dropped and acted as a plug (exactly what she was hoping for!). Once Mandy had checked my waters were clear she explained that the surges may now become more intense…she wasn’t wrong! After two more surges, which seemed close together, I got in the pool around 2.45am.

From here on it all seems a bit of a blur. I really went into myself and now understand what people mean when they say they go to ‘labour land’. The surges had become much more intense, I felt I really needed Martin with me for each one, I had to really focus on my breathing, and I had become a little non-responsive as between each surge all of my focus was on relaxing. At some point I asked Mandy if I could try some gas and air with the next surge which she got ready for me. I tried it for 3-5 surges but found that breathing through the mouthpiece really threw me off of my breathing techniques. I found that breathing how I’d practiced for so long was much more effective so I stopped using the gas and air and refocussed. At around 3.45am a second midwife arrived (Sarah). I was aware of her arriving and calmly introducing herself, but I’m not sure that I managed much more than “hi”! By this point I was getting at least one intense pushing sensation with each surge, but knew I couldn’t feel the baby's head low enough in the birth canal. I was really trying to visualise everything opening up and relaxing, rather than tensing up which would’ve been so easy to do.

Over the next half an hour or so the pushing feeling intensified and I really relied on Martin being there with me, talking me through each surge, reassuring me that I could do this, and holding my hands giving me that extra strength which I really needed. I could really feel the baby moving down, and by the time I could feel the baby's head really low I was needing to push with almost every breath throughout each surge. This is when the midwives really sprung into action (before now they were very good at letting me and Martin cope together). I wasn’t entirely
aware of what the midwives were doing around me as I was so focussed, but this is where Martin started to get really excited. I could feel the change in him. The excitement in Martin, and knowing the midwives had started to prepare things, really gave me the boost I needed after feeling a little exhausted. I knew my baby was almost here! I could feel the baby starting to crown – in preparing for my labour I had used an ‘Epi-NO’ which really prepared me for this feeling and kept me calm. The pushing sensation was at it’s strongest. It completely took over my body, I couldn’t control it so I tried to relax as much as possible to let my body do what it needed to do. Over the next surge or two, I knew the babies head was starting to come out. At the end of one of these surges I felt the baby retract and start to go back inside! I couldn’t believe that after feeling like I’d been pushing and progressing so well that it seemed to be going backwards! I said to the midwives “IT’S GOING BACK IN”! They very quickly reassured me that it was totally normal and with the next surge the babies head would be out, for good, and they were right.

One of my most vivid memories is when the midwives told us that our baby has lots of hair (!), their eyes are closed and they have no idea they’re being born. A few contractions later, and lots of intense breathing/pushing, the midwife said “one more surge and your baby will be here”! I couldn’t believe it. I was told to lean back and as I did, I instinctively reached between my legs to catch my baby and bring them up to my chest. I’d done it!! I rested back against the side of the pool holding my new baby against my chest, I really couldn’t believe it was a baby – the entire time I was pregnant I couldn’t comprehend that my bump was actually going to be a small human! The midwives were right, our baby had a full head of hair! I looked up to find Martin thinking, “oh my goodness, I have our baby!!” only to see him holding his phone, not what I expected, but he was recording our baby's first breath…wow!

After a few minutes of me and Martin looking at our baby, being totally absorbed in the moment, I heard Sarah say “you don’t even know what you have yet”, and this is when I realised that, after thinking it would be the first thing I’d want to know, I still didn’t know whether we had a boy or a girl! Martin looked and announced that we had an amazing baby girl. Little Luna Rae was born at 5.43am on Monday 24th July, and is absolutely perfect.

After months of preparation, plenty of reading, practicing breathing, relaxation techniques, and listening to mp3s I’m extremely proud to say that it was all totally worth it and I had, what I felt was, the most perfect labour and birth.

We cannot thank you enough Wendy x

The Birth of Anily

I thought I’d try and write my birth story for you today, I’ve tried a few times but have felt it sounded too exaggerated but there’s no way round it…it was awesome and I hope you can feel my smile as you read it!!!

So I’ve known
Wendy
for a few years now, we were both midwives at Frimley (although I don’t think our paths crossed on the wards). We were brought together by a diamond of a friend and we just got each other – our views, our beliefs. Wendy has the kindest soul but also a wicked sense of humour and I love her!

So when I found out I was pregnant, there was no-one else I wanted to share our journey with.

Cont'd below...

Being a midwife has had its benefits, but also it’s negatives, during my first pregnancy – I felt like I was finally doing the practical exam after many years of theory. After an initial 17 weeks of terrible hyperemisis, the rest of the pregnancy was an absolute dream and I (excuse my French!) bloody loved it!! I am in total awe of what my body can do and so so proud of it – I showed my bump off proudly and lapped up the compliments!

One benefit of being a midwife is that I’ve seen many births, including some awesome ones, and I had this deep down belief that I could have one of those…I was going to have a dream birth!

My partner, Chris, is not medically trained so I didn’t want him to miss out on anything but I also didn’t want him to just have the NHS or NCT birth prep class – they are amazing at giving the basics but I wanted him to know the birth secret – we could have an enjoyable birth!! So I immediately knew we had to invite Wendy round for a hypnobirthing lesson…and that’s where it all started! Chris really got on board – reading the book, playing the MP3s, using the words surges and discomfort and pressure when we discussed our birth – we knew we could do this!

We’d planned a home birth – I always pictured myself in our living room, candles, music, Chris and I dancing our baby into the world – I got a lot of shocked faces when we announced this but I just kindly asked people to support us and scurried off to listen to my positive affirmations! Unfortunately, right at the end I was measuring small for dates and a scan showed we had low amniotic fluid levels and they were concerned about the blood flow and suddenly we were confronted with talks of induction and all the risks of going full term. We used our BRAIN and came to a decision together with our lovely consultant…

However, my body had other plans and the night before our induction date I felt my first surge at 21.09 (on the way back from my last yoga session!) I drove home, ran a warm bath and lit a candle – the surges were coming regularly but I felt they were only short. Chris came home about 22.30 (he’d been watching the football with friends!) and immediately turned into my birth partner hero – he turned all the lights out, lit so many candles, got my TENS machine out, put my playlist on and cut me up some fruit – declaring he was my Oxytocin Guardian,
we spent just over an hour dancing together in the living room (ok I’m welling up just writing this – I want to go back to that time just to experience that again as it went too quickly!!) Chris had been keeping an eye on my surges and without me realising they had been lasting a good 50seconds and coming every 2minutes so we phoned Frimley and made our way in just after midnight!

Arriving on labour ward wasn’t half as scary as I thought it would be – I kept my breathing going and Chris firmly at my side…we were monitored and then moved to a room that Chris and the midwife turned into my dream – low lighting, bed up high so I could mobilise and lean on it, I didn’t even notice the continuous monitoring as I sway my hips and carried on breathing through – how amazing is gas and air by the way?!

I had no idea of time as I kept my eyes firmly closed and just wondered at the sensations I was feeling! I started to get pressure and the midwife gave this air of confidence that I could do it – everything was perfect and I confidently beared down, following my bodies lead and welcomed our gorgeous baby girl into my arms at 03.22 (we thought she a was a boy for the first 5mins – but that’s a whole other story and the moral is not to take the word of me high on gas and air and pure birth ecstasy!!) Anily Kimberley Evans was born wide eyed and inquisitive and spent the next 2 hours on my chest with her mummy and daddy in absolute awe of her! We did it!!

On paper our labour was 2hours and 58mins and if I’m honest now, it went too quick! I had the best time of my life, I’ve never loved Chris more and like a party that’s over before you know it – I want to relive it all over again!

Anily is just a dream – she’s so peaceful and perfect and completes our world in every way possible! I feel like I’ve been in a bubble of contentment ever since! I am certain that she’s as chilled as she is because she was born into a calm environment and we had that golden hour (well we were greedy and went for 2!) after birth!

So sorry it’s long but I could have gone on forever! Thank you, thank you, thank you Wendy for giving us this gift of knowledge and I will shout it from the rooftops “BIRTH IS AWESOME!!!”

As well as highly recommending –

1. Practice, practice, practice your hypnobirthing MP3s and breathing

2. Stay active – get walking and swimming

3. Eat your dates and drink your raspberry leaf tea

4. Do your perineal massage

5. Tell yourself on a daily basis that your body is amazing and you will have a positive birth

6. Have Wendy as your birth angel guardian

Lots of love

Kelly, Chris and Anily xxx

The Birth of Elsa

Our first birthing experience didn’t go to plan and although we intended to have a home birth we ended up with a very medical birth in hospital. This made us realize that the next time we would ensure we had as much help to hand as possible so that we could make the right decisions and stick to our plan.

We decided to use a doula instead of a private midwife because it doesn’t cost as much and we would have a midwife from the local home birth team here in Surrey. We met with a small number of doulas and then we met Wendy who we immediately felt very comfortable with and quickly realized she had the experience and attitude that we were looking for. So that was it she was hired!

Cont'd below...

Running up to the birth itself we attended hypnobirthing classes but also met a few times with Wendy who was really useful in building on our knowledge we gained at class which made us feel better prepared and more confident.

When the big day arrived Wendy’s presence had a huge impact. During each strong surge Wendy did light touch massage on Tess. This helped her to relax and breathe through the surges. Because of Wendy, Tess was more relaxed throughout the birthing process. Wendy reassured us many times and was also able to support the local midwife team very effectively. The combination of Wendy’s calm presence and her wealth of experience and knowledge created an atmosphere in which we both felt very comfortable and it ultimately led to a very successful home birth within 4 hours of labour!

We are very grateful to Wendy and believe that without her the experience would have been very different.

The Birth of Freddie

Hi Wendy we had a wonderful labour, 18hrs in total.

The breathing techniques were fantastic and I really utilised the birth stone which helped me to relax, it became know on the labour ward as the ‘magic stone’ .

I did have a wee bit of gas and air towards the end.
Freddie was born really alert and we had immediate skin to skin and he breastfed straight away.

We loved the whole experience and the breathing techniques really helped,

We can’t thank you enough x

The Birth of Berrima

Hi Wendy just wanted to share our wonderful birth story with you!

I had her at home with a midwife and Reinhard. Even with the
hypnobirthing classes I
felt confident but never expected to have her come so quickly.

I started having contractions that were intense about 10-10:30pm, 5 minutes apart. They began at about 7pm, but in 3 hours they had gotten closer together. I called the midwife and she came over, I was 5cm already.

Reinhard started filling a birthing pool, a small one, but I couldnt get in it yet as the midwife hadn’t arrived. She arrived and checked all was well, and I got into the pool. I had intended to have a water birth. After 20 minutes in the water, which was very soothing between contractions,
decided I wanted to get out. Not sure why, just wanted to.

I got out, went over to the bed and lay on my side, I really had a strong urge to push, and so I did. She crowned and 3 more small pushes it was done. So only about 10 minutes of active labour and 4.5 hours from first contraction to third stage, which just slipped out!

It was amazing!! and I feel so blessed to have this little gift of a daughter.

I put this all down to hypnobirthing, my body knew what to do and did it and I was along for the ride.

Thank you so much for preparing us! xxx

The Birth of Arliah

Hi Wendy finally got a moment to sit down and share with you how wonderful your input in our pregnancy and birth was, you are truly invaluable!

We attended our class around 22 weeks pregnant it was great to have the MP3s to listen to at night because it would knock me straight to sleep which wasn’t the easiest of tasks when pregnant! The hypnobirthing didn’t only make us relaxed and excited for birth but coming to your classes gave us confidence in our birth choice and confident in my body and it’s amazing ability to grow birth and feed a human. I chose to birth with the MP3s playing and as my surges got stronger and more intense I just kept reminding myself to breathe and my subconscious was already doing its job in listening to the MP3s and calming me.

The only job I gave myself was to breathe through my surges and
I had the most peaceful home water birth.

Our daughter came into this world calm and not at all upset by it all which is pleasing given its such an upheaval for the babies given that she had quite a stiff neck that we resolved with cranial it would of been completely understandable if she came screaming and shouting but she was lovely and peaceful.

We had a physiological 3rd stage that only took 30 minutes from the birth and thanks to the confidence you had given me I fought back to the midwives several requests to cut the cord sooner than we wanted and left her attached to the placenta for 40 minutes which gave us some much needed time to be together followed by skin to skin with her daddy.

All in all it was absolutely wonderful and I’m slowly talking husband into letting me do it once more!

We would love to have you be a part of our next birth however close or far that is xx

Vanessa's Positive Induction

Hi Wendy,

Just wanted to say a huge thank you for all your support and squeezing us in so last minute.

I contacted you when I was about 34 weeks pregnant with my second child. I asked if there was any point in doing a private class so close to the birth – I knew I was being advised to be induced between 38-39 weeks. Fitting us in especially in the last few weekends up to Christmas was so kind of you. I’m so relieved we went forward and met with you.

We had a negative experience with our first, in terms of the support we received from one of our midwives. The experience completely traumatised me and knocked my confidence. I was induced via the hormone drip and needed an epidural- the whole experience was so chaotic and distressing.

The sessions with you, the MP3 tracks, combined with us being able to communicate with you for questions, advice and the occasional pep talk really helped me visualise and hope for a better experience. It was hard to know if any of it would work and I felt sceptical but until it was put in practice I knew that was the only way to know.

Cont'd below...

The run up to the birth didn’t quite go to plan but the birth did and on reflection, things not going to plan actually worked in our favour. I was booked in for my induction at 11am.

I was told that it was highly likely I would go into labour that day as it was my second pregnancy. I started getting surges but they were a slow build up, I put the tracks on, listened to music, fell asleep and from about 9pm (8 hours after the pessary was inserted) I was getting 2-3 strong-ish surges every 10 minutes. I was told I needed to stay overnight, I wanted to go home to rest but we just followed the advice and stayed. We both had no sleep but in the morning they said they’d transfer me to the labour ward at 10:30 am to progress to the next stage – breaking of my waters. This, I was told, would definitely move things along. Despite lack of sleep, I felt hopeful that by breaking waters early in the day, I’d still have enough energy to avoid the hormone drip and epidural. Time passed, with 4 emergencies coming through the ward I was told at 4pm it was highly unlikely I would be going up to the labour ward anytime soon. I was completely devastated, I’d been bouncing on a birth ball, breathing through the surges which were 4-5 every 10 minutes and had felt so ready mentally. My body completely shut down and unsurprisingly my surges pretty much stopped. I felt so demoralised and I was feeling so sad I would not be at home with my daughter on Christmas Eve.

I was called up the labour ward at 6:30pm and after an examination I was 2cm dilated and they broke my waters with ease. I explained to the midwives my wishes and they were supportive of my wishes to try anything that would avoid the hormone drip and epidural. They gave us 4 hours to try anything, long walks, walking up the stairs – anything. Four hours later, I knew my surges although very strong, they weren’t frequent enough. Upon examination I was now 3cm dilated and exhausted. It was 11pm Friday night and I hadn’t slept since Wednesday night. I was devastated and said I felt at a loss to what to do as I just knew that it was looking highly likely I would need the hormone drip and epidural as I was just so tired and wouldn’t have the strength to have the birth I wanted. Andrew spoke to the midwife as I went for a warm shower. When I came out he found out what further options there were for me. One last chance was that the midwife would give me a shot of pethidine to relax me and allow me to sleep for a few hours, Andrew said he’d turn all the lights off, get the candles out, begin massaging me and to listen to my music and just relax. He felt trying to relax me would be more effective than trying to initiate labour through more active ways. I was given pethidine at midnight and 2 hours and 20 minutes later I woke up feeling the surges incredibly strong and I felt like I couldn’t take it anymore. I asked andrew to get the midwife quickly, only to be told she had left the ward for 5 minutes. I started to say I didn’t know what was happening to me, I couldn’t do it and I needed help. Andrew said all the time I was saying this, I was actually really calm and he knew and our midwife who had now turned up knew, I was already transitioning. He grabbed the frankincense and SOS remedy and helped me get into position to check, which took 15 minutes, as the surges were really frequent as well as the strong urges of pushing down.

I was fully dilated and he helped flipped me over the bed so I was kneeling propped up. As I experienced each surge to push down, I just let my body do it for me. I didn’t need to push, weirdly each time I felt the pushing down and eventually the crowning – I felt a sense of relief and that I’d be soon there holding my baby – I was in a relaxed state completely zoned out. I used the gas and air which actually helped me to not forcefully push out and 20 minutes later at 3:00am on Christmas Eve – she was here, no screaming, calm, chilled and wide eyed.

The cord wasn’t cut until it had stopped pulsating and she had such amazing colour to her skin tone. No catheters, no drip! Also my visualisations has always been trying to give birth in the kneeling position and I did that too- it really did work!

My husband swears by the hypnobirthing experience- he wishes we’d tried it for our first and should we have another there’s absolutely no doubt we’d be in touch with you. Being able to message you right up until the last moment before she was born made such a difference – you helped me to refocus and stay positive at what I thought was my lowest point. I also actually miss listening to the tracks!

Thank you so much for helping me to change my mindset and being so wonderfully supportive and carrying hope for me when I felt there was none. I never thought it was possible to have another child AND the birth I always wanted. Having had 2 inductions now, hypnobirthing has proven to me how it is still possible to take control and still have a positive experience. I’m still in shock I was able to avoid the drip – the staff were actually getting it ready for me!

P.S all the concerns re weight of baby…she was 6lbs 8!

The Birth of Frankie

Hi Wendy, you were the best thing that could have happened to us, from the moment we met you we knew you had to be part of our birth and we are just soooo grateful you were here!

We were both just marvelling at why anyone would do this without a Wendy!!!! xxx

The Birth of Rafferty

The most amazing birth experience! I still can’t believe it was all so “easy”!

We had a beautiful baby boy at 4.33am, 7lb 11oz. Name still to be decided!

I can’t thank you enough.

Ok, here it is, my birth story. So my waters went in more of a gush at 1am, I went back to sleep! At 1.30am I had a bath. Got to the hospital at 3am, I was straight into the
pool room they had already dimmed the lights, so I had my antibiotics and then got in the pool. The midwives were amazing really supportive and used my birth affirmations when they felt I needed it, i.e transition when I shouted “fuck this hippy shit I don’t want to do this!”

Tom was great, reminding me that I was in control and it was my body doing the work so just to trust it. I hadn’t realised how far I was so at one point thought I was doing a poo, put my hand down and there was babies head! Then it was all very calm, I went silent which as you know is not like me at all!

Baby was born at 4.33am! It was the most amazing, calm, beautiful birth. He is so chilled out, he stayed asleep when he was born! Xx

The Birth of Bhodi Florence

Hi Wendy!

Thought I’d let you know that I gave birth to our daughter this morning, Bodhi Florence, 10 days early weighing 8lbs 2oz.

Made it to the Mulberry at 3.20am and she arrived with the help of gas and air at 4.10am! No tears or grazes, convinced I was able to stay at home for as long as I did because of the breathing exercises!

Thanks for all your help x

The Birth of Harry

Thank you Wendy – your relaxation classes really helped, particularly in the early stages of labour. The ‘square’ visualisation really helped me keep calm during surges. I ended up having my waters broken and so it went from 0-100 at 3cms dilated! But just gas and air got me through it and he was born
1hr 40 minutes later! Despite not getting my home water birth, we still took led candles, oils/diffuser and a relaxing playlist to try and make the room as pleasant as possible, and apart from a little cry when he was first born, he has been so calm and chilled. Seems to be doing really well with breastfeeding so far too.

Thank you so much for your support over the past couple of months! Xxx

The Birth of Ayla

Very happy to share that Ayla arrived on the 19th June at 12.43am weighing 5lb 12oz.

Ayla arrived a little earlier than planned at 35 weeks by emergency section, the hypnobirthing knowledge helped us to stay calm & focused.

Thanks so much Wendy x

The Birth of Bluebell

What a whirlwind of a night! Baby was born in less than 3hrs, it was so quick! I birthed her in the pool at home, feeling so blessed and birthed entirely how we wanted.

It was the best birth I could have wished for.

You have been so amazingly kind to us Wendy thanks for everything xxx

The Birth of Freddie

Really pleased and happy to introduce Freddie! Born on 19th August, two days before due date (so glad not to have the induction conversation!), weighing in at 9’1.

He’s amazing, and so is his hair!!

I started twinges on Friday at 2am, and it was quite slow and gentle at first. I finally went in about 8.30am on Saturday (the unit was closed, but I think they realised I wasn’t going to make Guildford or Worthing by that stage…) – 5cm dilated, and got very lucky with the one room with a birthing pool on the higher-dependency unit. Dave did ask for the respirator to be cleared, but no time for fairy lights!! I think he was quite relieved…

Pool was amazing. Tried gas and air, but didn’t get on with it, so ended up with no pain relief at all.

I couldn’t give birth in the water, I tried but after 90 minutes pushing, his heart rate was slowing after contractions, so the plan changed to ‘legs in stirrups’, and they discovered the cord was looped round his neck. But, they sorted that and he was out pretty quickly after that, just a couple of pushes!

Dave caught him, and we did delayed cord clamping and natural delivery for the third stage (I do remember saying ‘I don’t want to push any more’!)

Thanks Wendy – Dave was going through my affirmations, and I felt in control of everything all the way through, even when the plan changed.

At home the next day, and have really enjoyed every moment, especially with Dave in paternity leave too.

He said last night, ‘Did you think it would be this much fun?’ And I never dared to dream it would be.

Thanks so much Wendy

The Birth of Leo

Leo Arthur Rowley weighed in at 8lb 2 1/2 ounces and arrived 03:53 on the 08th Jan.

The hypnobirthing helped me get all the way to 10cm pain relief free until I had to go to theatre due to the baby being in a tricky position.

Thank you so much Wendy x

The Birth of Sophie

After a complicated and traumatic first birth, followed by a week in hospital/ on neonatal we wanted to give ourselves every opportunity to have a better experience second time around.

Wendy came to our house and listened carefully to our birth story.
She showed a lot of interest and sympathy and was generally a good, comforting ear.
She then, over 3 sessions, told us about hypnobirthing and how the experience could be a totally different one.
My husband was initially not enthused about the idea of hypnobirthing, and had described the birth of our first child as the most terrifying experience of his life so Wendy really had her work cut out to make him view things differently!

However, afterwards we were both in a position where we were actually looking forward to the birth of our second child. We were given a lot of confidence and knowledge during our sessions and really enjoyed the experience.

We were also given some great reading recommendations and some good positive help with our birth plan.
Wendy was very careful to describe all options open to us and the the pros and cons of them all – I was very pleased with our birth plan and I believe the staff at the hospital took it seriously and found it helpful.

Even after the course and home visits were over, Wendy remained on hand, and I had several discussions with her following consultant and midwife appointments, with general worries and questions that I had, as well as help and queries about hypnobirthing techniques and hiring a doula.

Ultimately our second birth was one of 2 halves: the first was the lovely calm hypnobirthing experience that we were after, and then after pushing for 2 hours I ended up back in theatre with
forceps. However, it was still a completely different experience to the first time.
We both had the knowledge and confidence to ask questions and challenge some of the options that we were given and felt a lot more in control. I did not have an epidural until the very end and the
forceps
were used quite lightly with significantly less damage done! We were then home in less than 24 hours.

A year on I am really proud that I managed to experience hypnobirthing.
I would love to give it another shot!
I reckon that next time I would totally ace it.
My husband is somewhat less enthused about the idea though!

I would recommend Wendy and her hypnobirthing course to anyone – and I frequently have.

She is a wonderful, warm, approachable, experienced and
knowledgeable person.

The Birth of Phoebe Rose

On 5th May 2017 at 5.05am, my gorgeous little girl, Phoebe Rose, was born at home in a birth pool.

My partner and I attended Hypnobirthing classes with Wendy as our son was born nearly 2years ago via elective c section because he was breech which was something we really didn’t want to go through again and

I was very nervous about birth.

We hadn’t even considered a home birth before attending the class when I was already 34weeks pregnant. Because I was a VBAC and I have a high BMI the midwives/anaesthetists/consultants insisted on the ‘dangers’ of a home birth and really piled on the pressure coming up with more and more risks.

But with Wendy’s support we dug our heals in and had the exact birth we wanted!

I had my music, candles, oils and a very successful 17hr labour!

If I had known about hypnobirthing and Wendy when I was pregnant with my son maybe I could have had a different birth with him!

Couldn’t have done it without you Wendy! xxx

The Birth of Ivy Tulip

My due date had passed and there were no signs of baby arriving, I tried everything I possibly could to induce labour naturally reflexology, acupuncture, spicy foods and lots of long walks but still it didn’t seem my baby was ready to met us. I kept positive thinking my baby will arrive when they are ready.

I was 40+14, I absolutely dreaded the thought of being induced it wasn’t what I had planned or wanted at all. But after a lot of thought (it was all I could think of!) a lot of reading my hypnobirthing books/NICE website/NHS website and discussing my opinions fully with my midwife and speaking to a friend who choose to be induced I decided it was the best thing to do for my baby.

I went into hospital and was given the pessary and then I was able to go home and carry on as normal.
I remember waking around midnight feeling uncomfortable, it was the beginning of my labour! I breathed through the surges and rested between them and felt calm thinking it’s happening. I used my affirmations to keep me focused, my baby was coming. As the surges came more frequent and stronger I used my tens machine which I feel helped as it distracted me.

It was around 4.30am when we went to the hospital, my surges were still coming strong I only spoke when I needed and stopped

walking as needed to breathe through them.

I was examined when I arrived the pessary had fallen out and I was 10cm I couldn’t believe it I was ready to go! I continued on

as I was but had the strong urge to bear down and the midwifes talked me through it.

I made the most of each surge, really listening to my body telling me with each one she’s getting closer! I still had my tens machine on and just had lucozade to keep my energy up I didn’t feel I needed anything else.

After a few hours I couldn’t quite get my baby to make it’s final turn and the midwife had said I may need some help but I was so determined I continued on as I was and tried different positions, another couple of hours went by and it was then I realised my baby needed to come so I agreed to the help. She was delivered by ventouse, she was perfectly fine and was happy and healthy! The slight bruise and cone on her head went down within an hour and you would never know.

Evy Tulip Hanson was born at 9.50am on Saturday 29th April and she’s absolutely perfect!

Thanks so much for your support Wendy x

The Birth of Oliver

Hi Wendy, thanks again for all of your knowledge.

I felt like a freakin’ rockstar!

I started getting some period type pains at 5am this morning. Mild sporadic surges all day. I was actually getting my eyelashes done at 2pm. Came on thick and fast
not long after. I left my house at 5:05pm. Waters broke after a big push in my car as we got to the car park. Matt wheel chaired me in, I had gas and air and he was born 50 mins after leaving my house! X

It was 100% different to my 1st birth, I was able to hold him, feed him, laugh, use my legs, feel it all and dress him!!!

All I ever wanted! Thanks so much Wendy x

The Birth of Bess

Bess Alicia Lawrence was born at 8:27pm on 23th May weighing 7lbs 14oz and we are completely smitten.

I was 41+2 and emotions running high as at 40+2, at my midwife appointment, they already wanted to book in an induction! But I said I wanted to wait and also declined her offer of a sweep at 41 weeks. It was a long week and had a few wobbles along the way but Wendy was amazing and provided support and reassurance. I attended one of her Relaxation classes at 40+3 which helped to get my positivity back on track and just being in Wendy’s company makes you more positive and confident.

The Birth of Ella Rose

Wendy I did it!!

I decided to go for the induction but with the mindset of just having the pessary. She wasn’t playing ball and her heart rate was too high for them to start but in that time I started getting tightenings. They finally got the pessary in at
7pm but it fell out at midnight after having more significant tightenings and she had moved further down.

They were gonna take me down to labour ward to pop my waters but they went by themselves before we got there
she had passed meconium so they wanted to monitor her but the midwifes were awesome and still supported me to be active and get into the best position.

From getting onto the labour ward at around 2, I pushed her out myself with no pain relief at 3:37am.

All thanks to the information and breathing techniques you taught me so thank you soo much!!

I also listened to your relaxation track in the antenatal ward when first tightenings started happening... helped me to block out my surroundings and relax!!

Managed to finally get the birth I wanted too
no pain relief, natural and no stitches, I couldn’t of done it without Nat he was an absolute star .

Thank you so much again Wendy xx

The Birth of Georgia

Baby Georgia was born this morning, at home (unintentionally 🙈)......

Lee and I had said until I saw the consultant midwife on Wednesday, if I went into labour I’d go into hospital as we wouldn’t have a ‘plan’ which was discussed and agreed with the team.

My waters went and woke me up at 0500 this morning, I got in the shower, put the TENS on while trying to warm up under the duvet in bed.... then didn’t want to move from my safe bed! The midwife on the phone to Lee at the labour ward refused to send anyone out to us and said I had to get onto the ward unless I was pushing.....

We started trying to make our way downstairs to the car. 4 contractions later (which were practically one after the other) and I could feel I was wanting to push, stupidly I went to the loo and lee called an ambulance. 1 push and her head was born, I yelled at Lee and he came rushing in with the ambulance lady on speaker phone got me off the loo and he caught her with the next push.

I could feel in myself that it was progressing fast, which is why I think I didn’t want to move from the bed, but never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d have her in the downstairs loo and Lee playing the part of the midwife 🙈😂

Although we didn’t really have time to set up the environment with all the twinkly lights, birth pool, essential oils etc, I was able to use the imagery techniques and breathing square which proved invaluable and when I started crying about 20mins before she was born (because lee was behind me and I thought I was on my own) I knew I was transitioning and not going crazy! Which was incredibly powerful.

Thank you for all your help and advice over the last couple of month, it’s been invaluable, and I now have my own positive and enjoyable birth to be able to share with others 😊 xx

The Birth of Lucy

Wendy’s practical, reassuring and motivational advice helped to make my third birth my best.

With knowledge about the birth process, such as transitioning and various hormones like oxytocin; learning about the various breathing techniques - 54321 and ‘the square’ and realising that I could have ‘a say’ about my birth experience rather than following instructions I felt confident and relaxed from start to finish.

I also learned some helpful tips about what to pack in a hospital bag, birthing positions, herbal remedies, relaxing music and energy-rich snacks.

I would highly recommend Wendy's
expertise to anyone seeking guidance and reassurance about any aspect of pregnancy, birth and beyond.

The Birth of Sophia

Hi Wendy

I hope you are well. Sophie and I can’t thank you enough for all the support during pregnancy and before the birth. A a ‘Dad to be’ I assumed I needed to just tick and box and attend however I was glued to all the sessions, which helped hugely during the lead up and birth in our decision making, especially when pressured with medical intervention (Induction)

The birth went as well as both of us could imagine and baby Sophia is beautiful, healthy, calm and content.

The midwifes at Frimley Park are second to none, I can be 99% confident none of your clients giving birth here would have anything to worry about, they are all hypnobirthing fans.

The Sister was over the moon we turned down induction, her words ‘I’m embarrassed by our 40% induction rate.’

Both the community midwives who come around and looked at the birth notes said to Sophie, you will be a home birth next time!....of which I replied……next time?!?

The Birth of Stanley

Dear Wendy

Home birth was reinstated in my trust on Monday 6 July, I was 41 weeks. It seemed last minute to change our plans but I knew home was where I wanted to birth. I had firmly resisted interventions at the 41 week appointment but doing so was leaving me stressed. I didn’t want to be anywhere near the hospital or its MLU. Within 24 hours we had a home visit sorted, pool ordered and the birth space set up with lights, affirmations and a lovely view of the garden. My anxiety melted away, I felt so in control and settled back into enjoying the last days of pregnancy. I am sure this feeling of calm helped get labour started.

Surges started around 2am on 8th July. I stayed in bed most of the night with the tens machine and found it a great distraction. I got in the bath at 8.30am and listened to the hypnobirthing relaxations. Surges were around 8 mins apart so we decided for my husband to go to work (at home) and I would call him back when things had progressed.

All day I laboured on my ball with the lights dimmed and Pixar films on the TV for some happy vibes. Surges tailed off by 5pm. I used the freya app but it made me focus too much on the numbers. Hubby appears from work, takes the phone off me and we have a cuddle on the sofa. Things quickly got moving again.

By 8pm it was clear I had progressed. We didn't need the timer, hubby timed my surges roughly himself and decided to set up the pool and called the midwife around 8.30. He was told home births were not running but he set them straight
😂

Midwife arrived and I agreed to a VE on the condition that I didn't need to know the number. It was uncomfortable but quick.

Active labour confirmed and I got back in the pool.

Surges tailed off around 1am. I was getting exhausted and frustrated feeling I was not getting anywhere so I agreed to another VE. We were close but a cervical lip was getting in the way. I bounced around on the ball for an hour eating jelly babies and at this point I requested gas and air to take the edge off as the urge to push was strong. Exhaustion set in and honestly I had a wobble at this point but hubby and midwives kept me on track. Gravity did its job and the waters finally broke so got back in the pool at 2am.

Pushed for a further hour before I could feel the head moving down. Then the world seemed to stand still as I reached down and felt baby's head. I very slowly and gently pushed him out and reached down to pick him up. Having got quite vocal in the 3-4 hours prior, the actual birth was incredibly quiet and peaceful. I remember everything coming into focus and feeling totally overwhelmed at the same time.

We sat in the water together for 15 minutes before deciding to get out. As I stood up the placenta came out without the injection. We moved to the sofa and cuddled with some tea and toast, birth playlist still playing. I had only two small grazes, and felt great!

Choosing to birth at home was the best decision I have ever made and have been on cloud nine since. I couldn't be prouder to have taken control and got the positive birth of my dreams
🥰
